Data centres have become critical infrastructure not only for the digital economy, but also for the traditional one. Artificial intelligence, cloud computing, financial services, Industry 4.0, and public services all depend on facilities that operate 24/7 with availability standards close to 100%.

This requirement for uninterrupted operation has a direct consequence: an intensive, constant, and growing demand for electricity. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), data centres currently consume around 1.5% of global electricity, and their consumption could more than double to nearly 945 TWh by 2030, driven primarily by accelerated computing for artificial intelligence.

Our Head of Distributed Generation, Juan Reinón, explores this in detail in an article on one of the key challenges facing today’s energy sector:https://elperiodicodelaenergia.com/la-gran-decision-energetica-de-los-data-centers/https://elperiodicodelaenergia.com/la-gran-decision-energetica-de-los-data-centers/

More than 100 participants, including representatives from the Ministry of Industry, trade associations, and private companies such as automotive giant Stellantis, gathered at CEOE headquarters to discuss the future of industrial energy through 2030.

The sector calls for regulatory stability to accelerate the deployment of energy storage, which is now seen as central to its competitiveness agenda.

Energy has become a decisive factor for industrial competitiveness in a context marked by price volatility and growing global demand. Hybridization of technologies and energy storage are gaining prominence as key tools to move toward a more resilient and efficient industrial model.

In this context, CEOE and Prosolia Energy brought together over a hundred key players from the business, technology, and institutional spheres in Madrid to discuss the future of industrial energy through 2030.

Participants included representatives from the Ministry of Industry and Tourism, executives from multinational companies such as Stellantis, and representatives from industry associations such as the Association of Energy-Intensive Companies (AEGE) and the Spanish Battery, Energy Storage and Hydrogen Association (AEPIBAL).

Renewables as a Lever for Industrial Competitiveness

The energy system is facing strong growth in electricity demand, expected to increase by 3.6% annually until 2030, according to the International Energy Agency, in a scenario shaped by high geopolitical uncertainty. This combination is creating tensions in energy markets and driving up costs for industry.

In Spain, the challenge is particularly significant: the National Energy and Climate Plan (PNIEC) sets a target of reaching 22.5 GW of storage capacity by 2030, compared to the current situation dominated by pumped hydro (just over 3 GW), with batteries and other technologies still at an early stage of deployment.

The first panel, moderated by Cristina Riesta, Director of Industry at CEOE, explored how industries perceive energy risk and the role of storage in providing stability for both the system and industrial consumers. Speakers included Gerardo Fernández, Partner at Baringa; José Carlos Gil, CEO of Ingeniería Libergia; and Antonio Ramón, Country Manager of Prosolia Energy in Spain.

Panelists stressed that energy storage has evolved from a technical option into a strategic necessity for energy-intensive companies, particularly given the increasing volatility of wholesale electricity markets.

“Industrial companies that do not achieve energy autonomy before 2030 will face a clear competitive disadvantage. Wholesale market volatility is no longer a temporary risk but a structural issue. Storage and hybridization are no longer optional—they are critical infrastructure for any company aiming to remain competitive. This requires medium- and long-term energy planning with a strategic vision,” stated Javier Martínez, CEO of Prosolia Energy.

Energy Hybridization: When Batteries Solve Demand Challenges

The second panel took a practical approach, analyzing real-world cases of companies adopting hybrid models combining solar and wind generation with battery energy storage systems (BESS) installed on-site.

Moderated by Pedro González, Director General of AEGE, the panel featured Ignacio Cortés, Manager of Stellantis Renewable Electricity; Juan Reinón, Head of Distributed Generation at Prosolia Energy; Andrés Pinilla, BESS Sales Director for Europe & LatAm; and Jesús Mora, Business Developer at Enspired.

The Stellantis Group stands out as one of the most representative cases. In partnership with Prosolia Energy as a strategic partner, it has deployed multi-energy renewable solutions that allow it to cover up to 80% of its plants’ energy demand and significantly increase energy autonomy.

Another key point highlighted was the advancement of financing models with no upfront investment, enabling companies to adopt these technologies without impacting their balance sheet. This model is accelerating the adoption of storage solutions in industrial environments.

Regulation: A Key Factor in Advancing the Energy Transition

The third panel focused on the regulatory framework. Moderated by Paco Espinosa, Director of ACE, it brought together Miguel Gómez-Pavón, Deputy Director General for Industrial Strategy at the Ministry of Industry and Tourism; Luis Marquina, President of AEPIBAL; and Marta Sánchez, Energy Partner at EY.

The discussion highlighted administrative, operational, and market barriers slowing investment in battery projects, limiting their participation in flexibility markets, and increasing grid congestion risks. The importance of strengthening industrial capabilities to enhance Spain and Europe’s strategic autonomy was also emphasized.

“We have the technology, proven success cases, and growing industrial demand that can no longer wait. Today, companies are not only looking to reduce costs but also to gain stability and greater control over their energy supply. What we need now is a regulatory framework aligned with this reality—one that provides certainty and ensures legal security,” stated Juan Carlos Guaita, Chairman of Prosolia Energy.

About Prosolia Energy

Founded in 2003, Prosolia Energy is an Independent Power Producer (IPP) specializing in providing solutions to help clients transform their energy model toward decarbonization and enhance competitiveness.

With a strong presence in Spain, Portugal, France, Italy, Germany, and more recently Mexico, the company focuses on industrial self-consumption projects and renewable energy generation for grid supply. It currently has a project pipeline exceeding 4 GW in development across Europe.

Over the last decade, a significant share of industrial energy strategies has focused on reducing grid electricity consumption and increasing renewable generation for self-consumption. In many cases, the implementation of solar systems has enabled companies to reduce energy costs and improve operational predictability.

However, the energy landscape has evolved significantly. The increasing integration of renewable energy into power systems is reshaping market dynamics, introducing greater fluctuations in electricity prices throughout the day.

In this context, the challenge is no longer only about producing energy, but about managing when and how that energy is used.

The impact of volatility on energy markets

In today’s electricity markets, the value of energy continuously changes throughout the day.

Periods of high renewable generation may result in lower electricity prices, while moments of increased demand or reduced generation availability tend to lead to significant price increases. This difference between lower- and higher-price periods creates new challenges, but also new optimization opportunities.

For industrial facilities with high energy consumption, variable operating profiles, or exposure to dynamic tariff structures, flexibility is becoming increasingly important.

What is energy arbitrage?

Energy arbitrage refers to the strategic use of energy according to market conditions.

In a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), energy can be stored during lower-cost periods and later used when electricity prices are higher.

In practice, this energy may come either from the grid during more favourable tariff periods or from locally installed renewable assets, such as solar self-consumption systems.

Rather than simply reducing energy consumption, arbitrage introduces a new optimization approach based on the time value of energy.

The role of energy arbitrage in industrial environments

In industrial environments, energy costs are not determined solely by the amount of electricity consumed. They are also influenced by consumption profiles, operating periods, and exposure to market fluctuations.

The integration of storage systems introduces additional flexibility into the energy system, contributing to:

• reducing exposure to high-price periods;
• increasing energy cost predictability;
• optimizing the use of locally generated energy;
• improving contracted power management;
• strengthening operational resilience.

The value of this flexibility is expected to become increasingly relevant as energy markets continue to evolve and volatility rises.

From energy storage to active energy management

Traditionally, storage systems were primarily viewed as a complementary solution for self-consumption or as a backup energy tool.

Today, their role has become considerably broader.

BESS solutions are increasingly taking on an active role in energy management by integrating strategies that combine renewable generation, tariff optimization, load management, and operational flexibility.

This evolution is redefining the position of storage within energy systems: moving from a supporting technology to a technical and economic optimization tool.

A new approach to energy competitiveness

The evolution of the energy sector is reshaping how energy is integrated into business decision-making.

In a context of increasing volatility, growing electrification, and expanding renewable deployment, competitiveness will increasingly depend on the ability to adapt energy consumption to power system conditions.

In this context, energy arbitrage emerges not simply as a feature associated with storage systems, but as a management mechanism capable of increasing flexibility, predictability, and efficiency in energy use.

Over the past decade, solar energy has established itself as one of the most effective solutions for reducing energy costs and emissions in the industrial sector. For many companies, investing in a solar plant was a logical decision, delivering fast and measurable results.

However, the energy landscape has changed significantly. Today, having solar generation alone no longer guarantees optimized energy costs. The real challenge has shifted: how to manage energy more intelligently in an increasingly volatile market.

A New Energy Landscape for Industry

Industrial companies are now operating in a very different electricity market from the one in which many solar projects were originally designed.

Throughout the day, electricity prices fluctuate significantly. There are periods when energy is abundant and inexpensive, particularly during high renewable generation, and others when prices rise sharply, often coinciding with industrial consumption peaks.

In this context, generating solar energy during certain hours of the day is no longer sufficient to ensure stability, predictability, and cost control.

The Limits of Traditional Solar Plants

Many existing industrial solar plants were designed to maximize generation whenever sunlight is available. While this model remains technically efficient, it is not always aligned with companies’ current consumption profiles.

In many cases:

Peak consumption occurs outside solar generation hours

Part of the energy produced during the day is not fully utilized

Companies remain exposed to high electricity prices during critical periods

The result is a valuable renewable asset that is economically underutilized.

From Energy Production to Energy Management

This is where a key shift is taking place in the industrial sector. The focus is moving from simply generating energy to strategically managing the entire energy system.

Increasingly, companies are looking for solutions that allow them to:

Reduce exposure to electricity market volatility

Adapt energy supply to their operational profile

Increase system flexibility without adding internal complexity

This evolution is driving the adoption of integrated approaches that combine renewable generation, storage, and active energy management.

Solar ReShape: A New Way to Rethink Existing Solar Assets

Within this context, Solar ReShape emerges not as a standalone solution, but as a strategic approach to maximizing the value of existing industrial solar assets.

Rather than starting from scratch, the goal is to rethink and reconfigure the solar system a company already has, adapting it to current market conditions.

In most industrial settings, this approach involves:

A detailed assessment of the solar plant’s actual performance

Identification of optimization and expansion opportunities

Integration of energy storage to increase flexibility

Transition to a more stable and predictable energy supply model

In many cases, this type of system reconfiguration can be structured through energy supply models that shift both management and investment to an energy partner. This allows companies to remain focused on their core business while benefiting from greater cost predictability.

The goal is not just to produce clean energy, but to use that energy when it creates the most value for the business.

Flexibility and Resilience as Key Factors

By introducing flexibility into the system, particularly through storage, companies gain greater control over when they consume the energy they generate. This enables them to:

Reduce reliance on the grid during critical periods

Mitigate the impact of price fluctuations

Improve long-term cost predictability

More than simply responding to current challenges, this approach prepares industrial operations for a future where energy is managed in a more dynamic, integrated, and strategic way.

A Strategic, Not Just Technological, Decision

It is important to emphasize that this approach should not be seen as purely technological. Above all, it is a strategic decision, one that directly impacts competitiveness, risk management, and long-term business sustainability.

For many industrial companies, the first step is not investing in new equipment, but reassessing their energy system with a broader perspective, evaluating how existing assets can be adapted to better respond to the new energy landscape.

Rethinking Energy as a Strategic Asset

The industrial energy transition has entered a new phase. Success is no longer defined solely by installed capacity, but by the ability to adapt.

Approaches such as Solar ReShape reflect this shift in mindset: energy is no longer just a cost to reduce, but a strategic asset to be actively managed, aligned with each company’s operational and economic reality.

The 4th Prosolia Alicante Women’s Race has once again shown that sponsorship can go far beyond visibility. With more than 1,200 participants and 85% women, this year’s edition has become the most successful since its launch, confirming the strength of an event that brings together sport, solidarity, and community. The public’s response not only reflects the race’s growth, but also the importance of supporting initiatives that generate real impact in their surroundings.

The charitable component was once again the heart of the event. All proceeds were donated to APAMM, the Provincial Association of Women with Breast Cancer in Alicante, reaffirming the race’s commitment to causes that support hundreds of women and families every year. The intergenerational participation —groups of friends, families, support groups, runners, and walkers— showcased once again the inclusive spirit that defines this race.

For Prosolia Energy, as the main sponsor, this initiative represents the essence of purpose‑driven sponsorship: supporting projects that strengthen the social fabric, promote healthy habits, and generate a direct and positive impact in the community. It is not just about showing up; it is about accompanying, empowering, and giving continuity to initiatives that bring people together around shared values: solidarity, visibility, mutual support, and well‑being.

The Prosolia Alicante Women’s Race has become a symbol of unity and commitment. Each edition reinforces the idea that sport can be a driver of change, and that collaboration between institutions, companies, and citizens is key to creating spaces that transform and support people. A sponsorship that seeks not prominence, but impact. A race that not only adds kilometres, but also awareness and social support.

Prosolia has been recognised with the “Company of the Year” award by AVAESEN, the Valencian Association of Energy Sector Companies. This distinction highlights organisations that are driving real progress in the energy and technology landscape of the Valencian Community, promoting projects that contribute to a more sustainable, competitive, and future‑oriented model.

In an increasingly complex and demanding energy environment, this award underscores the work Prosolia is carrying out alongside the industrial sector to accelerate the transition toward more efficient and resilient generation models. The combination of renewable solutions, energy storage (BESS), corporate PPAs, and advanced energy management models has enabled many organisations to move toward greater autonomy and operational control, reducing their exposure to market volatility.

A recognition of real impact across industry

Beyond the award itself, this distinction reflects the transformation taking place within the energy sector. Today, companies require new capabilities:

• greater technological innovation,
• deeper integration between generation and energy management,
• and higher precision in time‑of‑use optimisation.

Prosolia is supporting industrial clients along this path, providing solutions that combine local generation, digitalisation, storage, and stable financial models. This integrated approach strengthens industrial competitiveness and enables more predictable energy planning in a system that continues to show volatility.

Energy transition as the axis of the future

The AVAESEN award also acknowledges Prosolia’s contribution to the energy ecosystem of the Valencian Community. The projects developed in the region —from industrial self‑consumption to large renewable installations and storage systems— are helping to build a more flexible, modern system aligned with Europe’s decarbonisation goals.

As AVAESEN stated, the award recognises the ability of these companies to “lead with impact”, an approach that combines innovation, social responsibility, and a clear vision for the future of energy.

Commitment, innovation and growth

Being recognised as Company of the Year reinforces the path Prosolia has chosen: a consistent commitment to technological advancement, project quality, and collaboration with the industrial sector. Renewable energy is no longer just about generation; it is about management, flexibility, and stability. This award confirms that Prosolia’s work is helping more companies progress toward that model.
