The large-scale retail sector is one of the most energy-intensive industries. Thanks to this agreement, seven supermarkets will generate nearly 1 MWp of clean energy without any further land consumption: the photovoltaic modules will be installed on roofs and parking carports.

Prosolia Energy, a leading European Independent Power Producer (IPP), and Coop Reno, one of Northern Italy’s most prominent consumer cooperatives, have expanded their strategic partnership to supply renewable energy to seven supermarkets across the Emilia-Romagna region through long-term Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs).

With a total installed capacity approaching 1 MWp, the portfolio enables Coop Reno to transform its commercial infrastructure into strategic energy assets. This initiative will drive competitiveness, improve operational efficiency, and strengthen the energy independence of its stores, while actively supporting the goals of Italy’s Integrated National Energy and Climate Plan (PNIEC).

CLEAN ENERGY ON ROOFS, WITH ZERO UPFRONT INVESTMENT

The collaboration between the two companies began in 2024 with the development of the first self-consumption photovoltaic projects at the Coop supermarkets in Castel Guelfo di Bologna and Ponte Rivabella. Following the success of this initial phase, the partnership has now been extended to five additional locations: Bagnara di Romagna, Casalfiumanese, Riolo Terme, Silla di Gaggio Montano, and Renazzo di Cento.

Structured under 15-year PPA contracts, the projects combine rooftop installations and photovoltaic carports, maximizing the use of existing commercial infrastructure. This approach not only allows Coop Reno to access renewable electricity at competitive prices with zero upfront capital expenditure (zero-CAPEX), but also enhances the customer shopping experience by providing shaded parking areas while generating clean energy on-site.

From an environmental perspective, the consolidated portfolio of solar projects, which now reaches a total of 784.92 kWp, will actively avoid the emission of approximately 210 tons of CO2 per year. Over the entire lifespan of the PPA agreements, this translates to more than 3,150 tons of mitigated carbon emissions.

A WIN-WIN SYNERGY FOR THE ENERGY TRANSITION

Graziano Cucciolini, Country Manager of Prosolia Energy in Italy, commented: “This strategic partnership perfectly reflects the type of relationship that Prosolia Energy aims to build with leading players in the Italian Large-Scale Retail and Consumer sectors: a long-term collaboration where we work in synergy to transform existing infrastructure into energy assets capable of driving business competitiveness. The decision by a key partner like Coop Reno to renew and expand its trust in our PPA model provides the strongest validation that we are building something distinctive and enduring in the Italian market.”

“With nearly 1 MWp developed across supermarkets in Emilia-Romagna, we are demonstrating that our model—which requires no operational burden or capital investment from the client while ensuring long-term price certainty—is exactly what the retail sector needs to navigate the energy transition required by the PNIEC. We look forward to continuing our growth journey alongside Coop Reno,” he added.

Andrea Mascherini, President of Coop Reno, stated: “In a landscape where businesses increasingly face energy challenges driven by geopolitical crises, this partnership with Prosolia Energy represents a fundamental strategic choice for the future of Coop Reno. Clean energy, capped prices independent of market fluctuations, and enhanced comfort for customers shopping at our supermarkets—all achieved without further land consumption by utilizing existing spaces like parking lots or building roofs. To use a food metaphor close to our hearts, these are the perfect ingredients for a ‘recipe’ that is healthy from every perspective: economic, environmental, and social.”

A SCALABLE MODEL FOR AN ENERGY-INTENSIVE SECTOR

Large-scale retail represents one of the most energy-intensive sectors in Italy. According to data provided by ENEA (the Italian National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and Sustainable Economic Development), commercial spaces in the grocery retail sector consume an average of 219 kWh per square meter annually, with approximately 95% of this demand directly linked to electricity consumption for refrigeration, HVAC systems, and lighting. This structural dependence on energy markets leaves the sector particularly exposed to price volatility, while simultaneously creating significant optimization opportunities through distributed renewable generation.

At the same time, decentralized self-generation is rapidly evolving from a voluntary ESG initiative into a regulatory requirement. Italy’s Integrated National Energy and Climate Plan (PNIEC), promoted by the Ministry of Environment and Energy Security (MASE), demands an acceleration of energy retrofits and a substantial increase in on-site renewable generation for large commercial facilities.

Data centres have become critical infrastructure not only for the digital economy, but also for the traditional one. Artificial intelligence, cloud computing, financial services, Industry 4.0, and public services all depend on facilities that operate 24/7 with availability standards close to 100%.

This requirement for uninterrupted operation has a direct consequence: an intensive, constant, and growing demand for electricity. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), data centres currently consume around 1.5% of global electricity, and their consumption could more than double to nearly 945 TWh by 2030, driven primarily by accelerated computing for artificial intelligence.

Our Head of Distributed Generation, Juan Reinón, explores this in detail in an article on one of the key challenges facing today’s energy sector:https://elperiodicodelaenergia.com/la-gran-decision-energetica-de-los-data-centers/https://elperiodicodelaenergia.com/la-gran-decision-energetica-de-los-data-centers/

More than 100 participants, including representatives from the Ministry of Industry, trade associations, and private companies such as automotive giant Stellantis, gathered at CEOE headquarters to discuss the future of industrial energy through 2030.

The sector calls for regulatory stability to accelerate the deployment of energy storage, which is now seen as central to its competitiveness agenda.

Energy has become a decisive factor for industrial competitiveness in a context marked by price volatility and growing global demand. Hybridization of technologies and energy storage are gaining prominence as key tools to move toward a more resilient and efficient industrial model.

In this context, CEOE and Prosolia Energy brought together over a hundred key players from the business, technology, and institutional spheres in Madrid to discuss the future of industrial energy through 2030.

Participants included representatives from the Ministry of Industry and Tourism, executives from multinational companies such as Stellantis, and representatives from industry associations such as the Association of Energy-Intensive Companies (AEGE) and the Spanish Battery, Energy Storage and Hydrogen Association (AEPIBAL).

Renewables as a Lever for Industrial Competitiveness

The energy system is facing strong growth in electricity demand, expected to increase by 3.6% annually until 2030, according to the International Energy Agency, in a scenario shaped by high geopolitical uncertainty. This combination is creating tensions in energy markets and driving up costs for industry.

In Spain, the challenge is particularly significant: the National Energy and Climate Plan (PNIEC) sets a target of reaching 22.5 GW of storage capacity by 2030, compared to the current situation dominated by pumped hydro (just over 3 GW), with batteries and other technologies still at an early stage of deployment.

The first panel, moderated by Cristina Riesta, Director of Industry at CEOE, explored how industries perceive energy risk and the role of storage in providing stability for both the system and industrial consumers. Speakers included Gerardo Fernández, Partner at Baringa; José Carlos Gil, CEO of Ingeniería Libergia; and Antonio Ramón, Country Manager of Prosolia Energy in Spain.

Panelists stressed that energy storage has evolved from a technical option into a strategic necessity for energy-intensive companies, particularly given the increasing volatility of wholesale electricity markets.

“Industrial companies that do not achieve energy autonomy before 2030 will face a clear competitive disadvantage. Wholesale market volatility is no longer a temporary risk but a structural issue. Storage and hybridization are no longer optional—they are critical infrastructure for any company aiming to remain competitive. This requires medium- and long-term energy planning with a strategic vision,” stated Javier Martínez, CEO of Prosolia Energy.

Energy Hybridization: When Batteries Solve Demand Challenges

The second panel took a practical approach, analyzing real-world cases of companies adopting hybrid models combining solar and wind generation with battery energy storage systems (BESS) installed on-site.

Moderated by Pedro González, Director General of AEGE, the panel featured Ignacio Cortés, Manager of Stellantis Renewable Electricity; Juan Reinón, Head of Distributed Generation at Prosolia Energy; Andrés Pinilla, BESS Sales Director for Europe & LatAm; and Jesús Mora, Business Developer at Enspired.

The Stellantis Group stands out as one of the most representative cases. In partnership with Prosolia Energy as a strategic partner, it has deployed multi-energy renewable solutions that allow it to cover up to 80% of its plants’ energy demand and significantly increase energy autonomy.

Another key point highlighted was the advancement of financing models with no upfront investment, enabling companies to adopt these technologies without impacting their balance sheet. This model is accelerating the adoption of storage solutions in industrial environments.

Regulation: A Key Factor in Advancing the Energy Transition

The third panel focused on the regulatory framework. Moderated by Paco Espinosa, Director of ACE, it brought together Miguel Gómez-Pavón, Deputy Director General for Industrial Strategy at the Ministry of Industry and Tourism; Luis Marquina, President of AEPIBAL; and Marta Sánchez, Energy Partner at EY.

The discussion highlighted administrative, operational, and market barriers slowing investment in battery projects, limiting their participation in flexibility markets, and increasing grid congestion risks. The importance of strengthening industrial capabilities to enhance Spain and Europe’s strategic autonomy was also emphasized.

“We have the technology, proven success cases, and growing industrial demand that can no longer wait. Today, companies are not only looking to reduce costs but also to gain stability and greater control over their energy supply. What we need now is a regulatory framework aligned with this reality—one that provides certainty and ensures legal security,” stated Juan Carlos Guaita, Chairman of Prosolia Energy.

About Prosolia Energy

Founded in 2003, Prosolia Energy is an Independent Power Producer (IPP) specializing in providing solutions to help clients transform their energy model toward decarbonization and enhance competitiveness.

With a strong presence in Spain, Portugal, France, Italy, Germany, and more recently Mexico, the company focuses on industrial self-consumption projects and renewable energy generation for grid supply. It currently has a project pipeline exceeding 4 GW in development across Europe.

The 4th Prosolia Alicante Women’s Race has once again shown that sponsorship can go far beyond visibility. With more than 1,200 participants and 85% women, this year’s edition has become the most successful since its launch, confirming the strength of an event that brings together sport, solidarity, and community. The public’s response not only reflects the race’s growth, but also the importance of supporting initiatives that generate real impact in their surroundings.

The charitable component was once again the heart of the event. All proceeds were donated to APAMM, the Provincial Association of Women with Breast Cancer in Alicante, reaffirming the race’s commitment to causes that support hundreds of women and families every year. The intergenerational participation —groups of friends, families, support groups, runners, and walkers— showcased once again the inclusive spirit that defines this race.

For Prosolia Energy, as the main sponsor, this initiative represents the essence of purpose‑driven sponsorship: supporting projects that strengthen the social fabric, promote healthy habits, and generate a direct and positive impact in the community. It is not just about showing up; it is about accompanying, empowering, and giving continuity to initiatives that bring people together around shared values: solidarity, visibility, mutual support, and well‑being.

The Prosolia Alicante Women’s Race has become a symbol of unity and commitment. Each edition reinforces the idea that sport can be a driver of change, and that collaboration between institutions, companies, and citizens is key to creating spaces that transform and support people. A sponsorship that seeks not prominence, but impact. A race that not only adds kilometres, but also awareness and social support.

Prosolia has been recognised with the “Company of the Year” award by AVAESEN, the Valencian Association of Energy Sector Companies. This distinction highlights organisations that are driving real progress in the energy and technology landscape of the Valencian Community, promoting projects that contribute to a more sustainable, competitive, and future‑oriented model.

In an increasingly complex and demanding energy environment, this award underscores the work Prosolia is carrying out alongside the industrial sector to accelerate the transition toward more efficient and resilient generation models. The combination of renewable solutions, energy storage (BESS), corporate PPAs, and advanced energy management models has enabled many organisations to move toward greater autonomy and operational control, reducing their exposure to market volatility.

A recognition of real impact across industry

Beyond the award itself, this distinction reflects the transformation taking place within the energy sector. Today, companies require new capabilities:

• greater technological innovation,
• deeper integration between generation and energy management,
• and higher precision in time‑of‑use optimisation.

Prosolia is supporting industrial clients along this path, providing solutions that combine local generation, digitalisation, storage, and stable financial models. This integrated approach strengthens industrial competitiveness and enables more predictable energy planning in a system that continues to show volatility.

Energy transition as the axis of the future

The AVAESEN award also acknowledges Prosolia’s contribution to the energy ecosystem of the Valencian Community. The projects developed in the region —from industrial self‑consumption to large renewable installations and storage systems— are helping to build a more flexible, modern system aligned with Europe’s decarbonisation goals.

As AVAESEN stated, the award recognises the ability of these companies to “lead with impact”, an approach that combines innovation, social responsibility, and a clear vision for the future of energy.

Commitment, innovation and growth

Being recognised as Company of the Year reinforces the path Prosolia has chosen: a consistent commitment to technological advancement, project quality, and collaboration with the industrial sector. Renewable energy is no longer just about generation; it is about management, flexibility, and stability. This award confirms that Prosolia’s work is helping more companies progress toward that model.

In an interview with Graziano Cucciolini, Country Manager of Prosolia Energy, the company’s perspective on the development of PPAs and Italy’s strategic role in the European context was explored.

The analysis reveals a positive outlook: Cucciolini does not foresee a slowdown in the PPA market in Italy; on the contrary, he expects a progressive expansion. At the same time, significant growth in asbestos remediation activities is anticipated throughout 2026, increasingly integrated with solar PV development projects.

The interview also provided insight into Prosolia Energy’s strategy in the country, with a focus on hybrid plants and growth objectives: the company aims to reach 3 GW of installed capacity in Italy by 2030.

The financing includes a €150 million senior debt construction warehouse facility provided by ABN AMRO, SMBC, and Santander to fund up to 600 MW of utility-scale and distributed generation assets across seven jurisdictions, using multiple technologies.

Another €94 million senior debt facilities with Goldman Sachs have been raised to fund the construction of various pipeline projects.

Prosolia Energy, a leading international Independent Power Producer (IPP), has secured €380 million in financing to support the development of its global pipeline, including photovoltaic, wind, and battery storage assets. This significant funding milestone represents a major step forward in the company’s expansion plans and provides a solid financial foundation for its global business strategy.

The financing package includes three significant transactions. The first one is a €150 million warehouse facility to support a diversified portfolio of up to 600 MW of utility-scale and distributed generation renewable assets across multiple technologies, including BESS, in seven different countries.

The warehouse facility was provided by ABN AMRO, SMBC and Santander, and stands out for its innovative and flexible structure, enabling the inclusion of multiple renewable energy asset types and technologies over the upcoming years.

In parallel, the company has also completed a €94 million transaction, with Goldman Sachs as sole underwriter, to finance various industrial self-consumption projects. These include assets developed, built, and operated by Prosolia Energy, notably one of France’s largest hybrid PV carport projects.

Additionally, Prosolia Energy has closed nearly €135 million in senior debt facilities with SMBC as sole underwriter for its recent acquisition of 229 MW of operational projects in Spain from EDP Renováveis.

Javier Martínez, CEO of Prosolia Energy, stated: “These transactions demonstrate the strength of Prosolia Energy and the confidence of our key financial partners in supporting our growth strategy. They allow us to continue developing our portfolio in a strategic and diversified manner at a global level, backed by solid and competitive financing.”

With this financing in place, Prosolia Energy is well positioned to execute its ambitious strategic roadmap as an international IPP, accelerate growth by pursuing new opportunities in key regions, and diversify its portfolio to continue delivering high-impact renewable energy solutions while boosting industrial competitiveness worldwide.

About Prosolia Energy

Founded in 2003, Prosolia Energy is an Independent Power Producer (IPP) specializing in providing solutions to help its clients transition to a decarbonized energy model and improve their competitiveness.

With a strong presence in Spain, Portugal, France, Italy, Germany and, more recently, in Mexico, Prosolia Energy focuses on industrial self-consumption projects and renewable energy generation for grid sales. Currently, the company has a European project portfolio exceeding 4 GW.
